Tamoxifen is made from tamoxifen citrate. It is not an anabolic steroid but an oral antiestrogen. Tamoxifen prevents gynecomastia while reducing water and fat retention, it allows the restart of testosterone production in the testes.

Tamoxifen is a powerful anti-estrogen and a favorite among bodybuilders. It avoids the phenomena of feminization which frequently occur at the end of a cycle of anabolic steroids such as gynecomastia as well as fatty and aqueous retention in the hips or breasts. Indeed, at the end of the cycle, most anabolic steroids aromatize into estrogen hormone, causing the appearance of these symptoms. Tamoxifen citrate has the ability to block estrogen receptors, thus preventing estrogen from working and causing these phenomena. Many bodybuilders use Tamoxifen before a competition because besides preventing gynecomastia, lowering water and fat retention helps the bodybuilder to achieve a lean physique.

Finally, Tamoxifen has the ability to increase the production of endogenous testosterone, which is particularly appreciated by bodybuilders at the end of the cycle. Indeed, at the end of the cycle, the production of testosterone is generally at a fairly low level because throughout the cycle, the anabolics taken are inhibited and replaced.
