Acarbose or Glucobay is an anti-diabetic medicine known as an α-glucosidase inhibitor. Acarbose is used to control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes when diet, exercise, and weight loss have not controlled it well enough.

Description

This medicine is often added to other diabetes medicines when additional blood sugar control is needed. Acarbose works by preventing the breakdown of starch into sugar (by blocking the α-glucosidase enzyme) and helping to lower blood sugar after meals.

The recommended dose of acarbose for adults varies. The starting dose is 50 mg once daily, gradually increasing the dose as needed to control blood sugar. The maximum daily dose is 100 mg three times a day, taken with the first bite of a meal.
